Best Fabrics for Business Suits by Market and Price Point

Wool blend, polyester-viscose, stretch and performance fabric: which one suits which market, and how fabric choice affects cost, drape and reorder consistency.

Fabric usually accounts for the largest part of a suit’s cost, and it is the decision that most affects how the finished garment is judged by a customer. Choosing well is about matching the fabric to the market and the price point, not about finding the objectively best material.

Polyester-viscose blends

The workhorse of volume suiting. Polyester gives durability and shape retention; viscose improves the hand feel and drape. A good polyester-viscose reads much more expensive than its cost, and it holds colour consistently across repeat orders.

Best for: wholesale ranges, uniforms, value-priced retail, high-volume programmes with frequent reorders.

Wool blends

Adding wool transforms the hand feel, breathability and natural recovery of the fabric. Blends in the 50–70% wool range are the standard choice for brand programmes that need to compete on quality. Pure wool is reserved for premium and luxury positioning, where the price difference has to be justified by the brand story.

Best for: brand programmes, mid to premium retail, tailoring with a strong fit story.

Stretch fabrics

A small percentage of elastane dramatically changes how a suit wears during a working day, particularly in slim fits and in markets where customers sit for long periods. Stretch also reduces the stress on seams and can reduce returns caused by fit complaints.

Best for: slim-fit ranges, modern office wear, younger markets, uniforms for active staff.

Performance and easy-care fabrics

Wrinkle resistance, machine washability and moisture management matter enormously in uniform and travel-oriented product. These fabrics are engineered rather than natural, and their quality varies widely — always test the finished garment after washing, not just the fabric swatch.

Best for: corporate uniforms, hospitality, travel ranges, uniforms for staff without professional laundry.

Linen and linen blends

Linen sells on appearance and comfort rather than durability. Blends improve crease recovery while keeping the texture that makes the fabric appealing in summer collections.

Best for: summer collections, resort and destination wear, casual tailoring.

Fabric decisions that affect your reorders

  • Confirm the fabric reference and keep a sealed swatch
  • Ask about the minimum order quantity per colour
  • Confirm dye lot consistency for repeat orders
  • Check shrinkage behaviour before approving the size chart
  • Confirm the fabric is available for your next season before you commit to the range

The last point causes more problems than any other. A fabric that is perfect for the sample is worthless if it cannot be supplied again in the same shade and weight for the next production run.
